Day hike checklist — ready for the trail

On a day hike, two small gaps can make the whole day harder, such as not enough water or no rain jacket when the weather turns. This list gathers the trail essentials, and shared with your hiking partners through a room code it's clear who carries the shared gear. No sign-up needed.

In short

For a day hike, take water, snacks or sandwiches, hiking boots and a comfortable daypack. Sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, a rain jacket and a spare shirt protect you from the weather. For safety, add a first aid kit, a power bank, an offline map and a whistle, and carry your rubbish back out with you.

17 items go straight into your new room; delete what you don't need, add what's missing. No account needed.

Tips

  • Work out sunset and the route length in advance and set an early turnaround time; being on the trail in the dark is a real risk.

  • Before you set off, tell someone close to you your route and your expected return time.

  • Don't take new boots on a long hike; break them in on a few short walks first so you don't get blisters.

  • Keep heavy items close to your back and at shoulder height in the pack; a balanced load means less fatigue.

How it works

  1. 1. Open your room

Tap the button and the items land in a fresh room. No account, no email, nothing to install.

  2. 2. Share the code

Send the room code or the link to the group; everyone's on the same list in seconds.

  3. 3. Finish it together

Who's buying what shows up instantly; bought items get ticked, so nobody buys the same thing twice.

Frequently asked questions

How much water should you take on a day hike?

It depends on the heat, the length of the route and your pace; a common starting point is about half a litre per hour, and more in hot weather. If there's no water source on the route, bring extra and drink a good amount before you start.

What should you do if you get lost on a hike?

Stop, stay calm and think about where you are, check your map and phone, and go back to the last place you knew if that's safe. If you can't find your way, stay put, attract attention with the whistle or your voice and call the local emergency number if you have signal. Having told someone your route beforehand makes you easier to find.

What if the weather turns during a hike?

Weather in the mountains can change fast: put on your rain jacket, keep your spare shirt dry, and shorten the route and turn back if needed. If there's thunder, move away from open ridges and lone trees.

Can I change the list?

Of course. The ready-made list is just a starting point: delete, add, move items between categories.

Do I need an account?

No. A room code is all it takes — no email, password or signup.

How long is the list kept?

As long as you use it. A list is only deleted after a month without any activity; even opening the room resets the clock.

Can I install it on my phone?

Yes. With the room open, tap "Save Room" to add it to your home screen and open it with one tap.
