Cuba Libre recipe — rum, cola and lime

A Cuba Libre shows that a little lime is all it takes to turn rum and cola into a proper cocktail. Copy the ingredients to your room, tick off what's missing at the shop, and keep the steps open on your phone.

1 glass · 5 min

In short

A Cuba Libre takes 50 ml white rum, 120 ml cola and 10 ml fresh lime juice, using the IBA measures, and one glass takes about 5 minutes. Fill a tall glass with ice, add the lime juice and rum, top up with cola and stir gently just once so the fizz stays. Serve with a lime wedge.

Ingredients

  • White rum50 ml
  • Cola120 ml, cold
  • Lime1 (10 ml juice + wedge)
  • Iceenough to fill the glass
  • Lime wedgeto garnish
  • Golden rumoptional, instead of white
  • Sugar-free colaoptional, instead of cola
  • Soda wateroptional, to lighten

Method

  1. Fill a tall glass to the top with ice; the colder the glass and the cola, the slower the drink gets watered down.

  2. Squeeze the lime: about 10 ml of juice is enough. Add the juice and 50 ml of rum over the ice.

  3. Top up with cold cola (about 120 ml).

  4. Stir only once with a long spoon, gently; too much stirring makes the cola go flat.

  5. Garnish with the lime wedge and serve right away.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a Cuba Libre and rum and cola?

The difference is fresh lime juice. Rum and cola is made only with rum and cola; a Cuba Libre adds lime juice and a lime wedge, which balances the sweetness and makes the drink much fresher.

Which rum is used in a Cuba Libre?

The IBA recipe calls for white rum, which gives a light, clean taste with the cola and lime. It also works with golden or aged rum, but the flavour moves towards something rounder and spicier.

Can you make a non-alcoholic Cuba Libre?

Yes: leave out the rum and add the lime juice and cold cola to a glass full of ice. If you like, replace part of the cola with soda water to lighten it; the lime wedge is still part of the serve.

Can I change the list?

Of course. The ready-made list is just a starting point: delete, add, move items between categories.

Do I need an account?

No. A room code is all it takes — no email, password or signup.

How long is the list kept?

As long as you use it. A list is only deleted after a month without any activity; even opening the room resets the clock.

Can I install it on my phone?

Yes. With the room open, tap "Save Room" to add it to your home screen and open it with one tap.
