Gin and tonic recipe — the right ratio and plenty of ice

A gin and tonic has just two main ingredients, yet it reacts to every detail: cold tonic, plenty of ice and the right ratio make the difference. Copy the ingredients to your room, tick off what's missing at the shop, and keep the steps open on your phone.

1 glass · 3 min

In short

A gin and tonic takes 50 ml gin, 150 ml cold tonic water and plenty of large ice cubes; that is about 1 part gin to 3 parts tonic, and one glass takes 3 minutes. Fill the glass with ice, add the gin, pour the tonic slowly down the side and stir only once. Serve with a lime wedge or a cucumber ribbon.

Ingredients

  • Gin50 ml
  • Tonic water150 ml, very cold
  • Iceplenty, large cubes
  • Lime1 wedge
  • Cucumber1 thin ribbon, optional
  • Fresh rosemary1 sprig, optional
  • Pink peppercorns3–4, optional
  • Grapefruit1 peel strip, optional

Method

  1. Chill a large wine glass or a tall glass in the fridge beforehand; the tonic should be very cold too.

  2. Fill the glass to the top with large ice cubes. The more and the larger the ice, the slower it melts and the less the drink gets watered down.

  3. Pour the gin over the ice.

  4. Add the cold tonic slowly down the side of the glass so it keeps its fizz; the ratio is about 1 part gin to 3 parts tonic (50 ml gin, 150 ml tonic).

  5. Stir just once with a long spoon, lifting the ice gently.

  6. Squeeze the lime wedge lightly over the glass, then drop it in. If you like, garnish with a cucumber ribbon, a rosemary sprig, pink peppercorns or a strip of grapefruit peel; serve right away.

Frequently asked questions

What is the right gin to tonic ratio?

The usual ratio is 1 part gin to 2 or 3 parts tonic; for 50 ml of gin, that is 100–150 ml of tonic. Use less tonic for a stronger drink and more for a lighter one. The tonic should always be very cold.

Why does my gin and tonic get watery so fast?

Usually there isn't enough ice or the cubes are too small; small cubes melt quickly. Fill the glass to the top with large ice, chill the glass and the tonic beforehand and limit stirring to a single turn.

How do I make a non-alcoholic gin and tonic?

Leave out the gin, pour the cold tonic over plenty of ice and add lime, cucumber or rosemary; it makes a fresh, light drink. Ready-made alcohol-free gin alternatives exist too, but tonic is already sweet on its own.

Can I change the list?

Of course. The ready-made list is just a starting point: delete, add, move items between categories.

Do I need an account?

No. A room code is all it takes — no email, password or signup.

How long is the list kept?

As long as you use it. A list is only deleted after a month without any activity; even opening the room resets the clock.

Can I install it on my phone?

Yes. With the room open, tap "Save Room" to add it to your home screen and open it with one tap.
